California Marriage Records

Orders for California marriage records may be placed with the California Department of Public Health, but customers can expect lengthy delays in getting them filled. Requests can be filed with the County Recorder’s Office in the county where the couple’s marriage license was issued. You also have the option of placing your order with a commercial website which can provide you with CA marriage records for a fee.

Where to Order CA Marriage Records
The Office of Vital Records can provide certified copies of marriage records for the following years:
1949-1986
1998-1999

This Office is unable to provide certified copies of records of marriages which occurred during the follow
ing periods:
1905-1948
1987-1997
2000-Present
   

You would need to contact the County Recorder’s Office to request a marriage record which dates from one of these times.

Information Required to Order a CA Marriage Record

You will also need to provide your name and mailing address with your request. Make sure to include your daytime phone number in case the staff needs to contact you with a question.

Fee to Order California Marriage Records
The fee to order a California marriage record is $14.00 per copy. If the requested record cannot be located, the amount paid will not be refunded. The state will issue a Certificate of No Public Record to you in this instance. Checks or money orders should be made payable to CDPH Vital Records.

Processing times for mail orders can be more than six months. If this length of time is too long, consider other options for ordering marriage records in CA.

Order Marriage Record in Person
You can order a marriage record in person by visiting the County Recorder’s Office in the county where the license was issued. Contact the office to confirm the hours of service to place an order and the fee to obtain a marriage record. The amount charged may vary, depending on the county, and each office will have its own policy about processing times as well.

If waiting period to order a California marriage record by mail is too long and you can’t or don’t want to go to a County Recorder’s Office, you can still place an order online through a website which can gain access to an online database to retrieve it.
